Advanced Junior Summer Camp- 2013

The inaugural Advanced Junior Summer Camp was a great success. Coach Vince Skillcorn and trusty side-kicks “T Dog” & “Slowe” along with guest appearances by Head Coach Luke Preston and Olympic Lifting Coach “Big Al” ensured a good mix of hard work and fun was had by all. Aimed primarily at competition players from 12 years and upwards, the camp had been designed to give an insight into the rigours of full time training. Participants were not only able to experience at first hand the ups and downs of 4 or 5 training sessions a day but also able to witness top level Judoka including Olympians Ashley McKenzie & Danny Williams and many other elite players pushing themselves to the limit during the course of their own training schedules.

The camp ran over 3½ days with the option to sleep over in the Dojo with all food provided, or simply turn up each morning for the first Judo Session of the day at 10 O’Clock. Those who stayed over not only benefited from the great culinary skills of Vince and Sam but also had the added bonus of washing up, sweeping the mats before bed and again prior to the first session of the day and an extra conditioning session straight after breakfast before the day trippers arrived! Needless to say there were moments when the Juniors probably questioned their own sanity and asked “why am I doing this?”, more than likely when doing their last hill repetition in the woods or a vigorous “Randori” session, but this was balanced with technique sessions, Judo specific games and swimming in the lake. Although by the end everyone was tired, none were broken and all left in good spirits feeling positive about their Judo. The juniors are to be congratulated on their performance – well done all!
