Camberley Judo Heats up Helsinki

Sam Lowe and Tomoko Kumamoto led the Camberley charge in a freezing Helsinki at the Finland Open last weekend. Sam at 78kgs won the silver medal narrowly losing out on points in the final against Lebrun of France-a former World Champion. Sam defeated opponents from Germany, Iceland and Russia en route to the final with a display of confident grip fighting and tactical awareness. Tomoko Kumamoto won the bronze medal at 63kgs. She beat opponents from Latvia and France before losing her semi-final match by a pin against Filzmoser from Austria. Tomoko fought an inspired match for the bronze medal and defeated former European Champion and GBR Olympian Sarah Clarke in a tense contest. Nathon Burns continued his run of good form from the Swedish Open and placed 5th at 60kgs. Nathon lost in the second round to the eventual champion from France in golden score but defeated opponents from Russia and Latvia to reach the bronze medal contest. Here he faced another Russian opponent and lost a close match with his opponent clinging on to a points lead at the bell. Danny Williams and Harry Fenner at under 73kgs both performed well. Danny finished 7th with wins against French, Finnish and Portuguese opponents. He lost in the repechage final against Spain and this left him in 7th place. Harry Fenner reached his first international quarter final with wins against Russia and Estonia. He lost his quarter final against the German champion and a loss in overtime against Portugal meant he could progress no further. Sophie Johnstone was forced to withdraw from injury in the quarterfinal match at 52kgs and this left her in 7th place.
