Chamberlain strikes for another bronze and team CJC is moving up in the World ranking

Six of our warriors headed onwards to the second stop of the Pan-American Tour held in Montevideo, Uruguay. Yet again, team CJC did not leave the venue empty handed. The tournament was part of the Olympic qualification and it was taking place in the usual format over two days, Saturday and Sunday.

Danny Williams started off the first day with an early win against Cedric Bessi (MON) in the U73kg category. Williams defeated his first opponent by an osei-komi waza. Coming up next was Everet Desilets (USA), 2012 Olympian Williams started off by receiving two shidos, stepping up his game his opponent also picked up 2 shidos whilst he got hit with a third one. With 3 penalties to 2 the match became very tactical and Williams was fighting for his dominating grip but the referee misread the action of the CJC fighter and gave him a fourth and final shido, bowing out of the tournament before reaching the quarter-finals.

A weight category below, in the U66kg category two of our athletes were competing, Nathon Burns and Aaron Turner. Both players started off by winning a contest, Turner threw Hernan Carrion (URU) for Ippon and Burns shortly followed his team mate’s action by throwing Gabriel Pinheiro (BRA), also for Ippon. In the second round Turner was up against Bradford Bolen (USA), another tactical fight resulting in a shido war on the scoreboard for the first half of the match. When the American managed to score, Turner was unable to get it back and didn’t go any further in the tournament. For Burns, a single win was enough to book himself into the quarter-finals where Antoine Bouchard (CAN) was waiting to challenge him, Burns started off strong but was defeated with an Ippon scoring throw. It was time to focus on the repechage where he had the chance to take a revenge for his team mate as he was now facing Bolen of the USA. The American judoka is well known for his strong shime-waza technique, Burns was defending well up until the third minute of the contest when Bolen found an opportunity to finish off the contest. Burns earned 7th place.

Szandra Szogedi was once again challenging for a medal in the U63kg category. Similar to last week’s performance, Szogedi started off with a promising win against Laura Salles Lopez (AND) where she threw her opponent first for a Waza-ari before finishing with an Ippon throw. In the quarter-final she met Almaty Grand Prix silver medallist and eventual winner Mariana Silva (BRA) who defeated her by three yukos. Diana Valesco (COL) was waiting for Szogedi in the repechage contest, the fight was tight between the two judokas and the contest ended with a single shido in golden score. Both fighters were head to head battling to get their dominant grip but Szogedi’s higher attack rate led the Columbian to pick up the deciding penalty. Olympic Bronze medallist, Ketleyn Quadros (BRA) was there to battle for bronze against Szogedi. Towards the end of the contest, the score board was dressed up in penalties on both sides. Three shidos each as they went in to the last 45 seconds on the clock. Szogedi gave the Brazilian a hard time on the next exchange and dominated her grips putting her opponent under pressure. However Quadros pulled out a sumi-gaeshi attack which earned her a yuko and the contest win. Another 5th place and important qualification points earned.

The second day of the tournament left the team with mixed feelings. Owen Livesey had Jerman Gasper (SLO) in the first round of the U81kg category, the Slovenian judoka came armed with a well-structured gripping strategy which forced a slight error by Livesey and allowed Gasper to score to take a spot in the quarter-finals. Frazer Chamberlain was on stage in the U90kg category. To get into the quarter-finals he overcome David Klammert (CZE) before meeting World Championships bronze medallist, Kirill Voprosov (RUS). The Russian left no space for error and settled Chamberlain into the repechage system where the CJC warrior showed a range of great judo skills and defeated Pedro Pablo Gonzalez Navarro (ESP). The win against the Spaniard turned out to be his Chamberlains last contest of the day as the news arrived that the bronze medal was his to claim as Kirill Denisov (RUS), who was supposed to face Chamberlain for bronze, got injured after his quarter-final causing him to withdraw.

Team CJC will make their way to Buenos-Aires, Argentina where the last Pan-American Open will take place at the weekend. We will have an additional member to cheer for as Ashley McKenzie will join the team on Wednesday.
