London Open 2013

Good performances all round from the small group who competed in the London Open 2013, a 3 star British Ranking event.

Lee Shinkin and Frazer Chamberlain were the only members of the Elite team to compete from Camberley on the Senior day. Both had 3 fights each and came away with the Silver medal in -73kg and -90kg respectively.

First to feature on the Sunday was Ben Baxter competing in the minors U42kg weight category.  Despite dominating his opening fight a lapse of concentration led to a first round defeat for Ben by Osae-komi (Hold-down).  Ben dropped into the repechage and won his next two fights, the first comfortably and the second narrowly on penalties. Ben’s fourth fight was another close affair, which he was just edging until he lost his composure having received a couple of penalties and was caught with an Ippon throw.  Hopefully he will learn from the experience .. !  Oliver Theobald (a regular visitor from Gosport Judo Kwai), was also fighting in this group and put in a creditable performance winning two fights.

In the U50kg Pre-cadets Toby Roberts fought back from any opening bout defeat by a single penalty, to win his next two fights and make it through to the final against the player who had beaten him in Round 1.  With a point to prove, Toby was not going to make any mistakes second time around and threw his opponent for maximum score early in the fight to take a well-deserved Gold.

Next up was Ewan Tweedie in the U60kg Pre-cadets.  Ewan showed some good Judo in his first fight in which he dominated throughout and won with an Ippon throw.  A defeat against one of the eventual finalists in the second round meant a bronze medal show-down was next on the cards.  Despite a valiant effort in a fight that ran the full distance, Ewan was unable to claw back an early score against him and had to settle for 5th Place.

Last to fight was James Preston House in U66kg Cadets.  James got off to a flying start with a beautifully executed throw for maximum score, but struggled against a strong opponent in a second round defeat and then lost his third fight, in which he dominated the early stages, after picking up an injury to his foot.
