Roberts rules at West of England Open

Toby Roberts reaped the rewards of his recent hard work in training by taking Gold in the U46 B category at the 3 star West of England Open.  The event had attracted a small but classy field of competitors in Toby’s weight group, all accustomed to winning at the highest level.  Toby topped his pool with some determined and sensible judo before meeting the Gold Medalist from the recent Kent International in the semi-final.  The contest was hard fought with neither player giving an inch and went into Golden Score.  A clear throw from Toby was missed by the referee and so it went to flags.  Toby rightly won albeit on a split decision!  In the final Toby showed that he could win in style catching his opponent with a lovely O-soto-gake for maximum score.  It was a great display from Toby who has only recently moved up to this weight category and was noticeably smaller than all his opponents.

Also fighting were Junior players Ben Baxter (U38), Louie Baylis (U34) and Jack Baxter (U27).  All put in determined displays with Ben & Jack just missing out on the medals and finishing 5th, and Louie gaining more valuable experience in a weight dominated by older players.
