British Championship medals for Mini warriors and Masters!

Both events were held in Glades Arena, Kidderminster starting with the Master on the Saturday. Camberley Judo Club (CJC) had 5 fighters taking part, Dan Harvey, Bill Tweedie, Tony Baxter, Andrew Barrenger and Gary Patey. Some gutsy fighting from all resulted in Gold for Dan Harvey +100kg and Silver for Andrew Barrenger -90kg.

On the Sunday a slightly more youthful bunch graced the mats for the 10 and 11 year olds British Championships. CJC mini warriors Ellie Kirby and Phoenix Govey-Gray fighting in the -44kg and -48kg respectively fought like little troopers. Both girls won 2 contests by ippon and displayed some fantastic Judo, Ellie scooped the Silver medal whilst club mate Phoenix finished with a bronze. Coach Natalie Hall said “I am very proud of the girl’s performance today, they really had to fight for the medals. Some big ippons and lovely Judo so I’m very happy. Well done girls!”

To finish an already successful weekend several CJC members attended the Surrey Heath Sports Awards. Ellie Kirby won Surrey Youth Games: Performance of the Games Award, this award was open to all Sports and all participants in the Games so it’s quite an achievement to win it, well done Ellie. CJC Elite Team member and Commonwealth Games Champion Owen Livesey also picked up some silverware in the form of Sports Personality of the Year. The award was presented to him by last year’s winner, club mate and also Commonwealth Games Champion, Danny Williams! Read more about the Surrey Heath Awards by clicking here.

Next for the might CJC is the Swedish Open for the Elite team and a competition and training camp in Belgium for the Advanced Juniors.
