Devizes Open

On Sunday several of the juniors travelled down to Devizes to fight in the 39th Devizes judo competition.
First up were the younger members of the group. Harrison Howe u27kg and Ruben Turner u30kg are still quite new to this level of competition but fought well and will gain a lot from the experience. Dylan Kirk also fighting in the u27kg fought well to take gold. Next up were TK at u38kg, Ellie Kirby u44kg, and Phoenix Govey-Gray u48kg. Both girls fought well and although losing their fights came away with bronze medals. TK fought his way through a tough group to take gold.
In the under 16 category Ben Baxter, Oliver Baldwin and Robin Lynch were fighting. Ben Baxter u50kg started well throwing his opponent for a massive ippon in his first fight. Unfortunately his later fights didn’t end so well and he settled for a hard fought 5th. Oliver Baldwin also fought very well but a couple of small mistakes in his fights cost him the wins. Robin fighting in the u42 and still very new to this level of competition was probably the stand out fighter of the day, winning his first fight with a big ippon and pushing all his other opponents, a great effort.
Gary Howe was also fighting in the seniors needing only 10 points for his black belt. He didn’t have the best day of Judo and was disappointed with his performance but still picked up the 10 points he required for his 1st dan. Congratulations! Well done also to Dan Harvey who won silver in +100kg.
Many thanks to Stuart Baldwin for looking out for the kids and making sure they were in the right place, and to Wendy Kirk for stepping in and helping out on one of the tables. Thank you also to Jonathon Purssey of Core Judo for keeping an eye out for the CJC crew. All in all another good day for all those that took part.
