Jess and Scott Shine in the West

On Sunday 12th July 2009, 2 of Camberley Judo Club’s younger members competed in Swindon at the West of England Championships. Scott Dunbar and Jessica Black both competed and both returned with medal success, from a competition that featured some of Britain’s brightest young judo players including some of those recently returned from the European Cadet Championships.

The day started well with Jessica (15) competing for the first time in 6 months following a serious injury. Although she narrowly lost her opening contest against an experienced player, she went on to win both of her next 2 contests against members of the England squad to secure a well deserved silver medal.

Scott (14) then competed for the first time in almost 18 months, having taken a break from competitive judo. His superior technique saw him win his first 2 contests without too much difficulty, and placed him in the semi final against the current British champion. A closely fought affair saw Scott defeated in the end, although not before putting his opponent in some trouble with his strength and technique. This put Scott into a contest for the bronze medal, a fight he won well to win a deserved 3rd place.

The next competitions for the Camberley juniors will see them fighting in Birmingham in September at the prestigious Heart of England competition.

Junior classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with beginners classes running from 6pm until 6.45 and the advanced classes running from 6.45 until 8pm.
