THE JUDO ASHES

CHARITY GALA DINNER AT PENNYHILL PARK HOTEL

In aid of the “Surrey Going For Gold” sports charity

On FRIDAY 21st AUGUST as the Ashes Cricket Series draws to a close, the five-star PENNYHILL PARK HOTEL, Bagshot in Surrey together with the Camberley Judo Club will be hosting a charity Gala Dinner with a difference. After a glittering Champagne Reception, guests will be treated to a bit of healthy British vs Aussie competition as future British Judo Olympians from the Camberley Judo Club compete against future Australian Judo Olympians over here in the UK to prepare for the World Judo Championships taking place in Rotterdam a week later. Two famous faces will be lending their support to the Charity, notably local Surrey resident and renowned actor BRIAN BLESSED (who also just happens to be a 3rd Dan!) and long time friend of Pennyhill Park Hotel and former England Rugby Head Coach, CLIVE WOODWARD.

After a judo display and a light-hearted briefing on the rules and scoring of judo, there will a be a series of exciting ‘contests’ throughout the evening featuring judo stars such as Samantha Lowe (2002 Commonwealth Champion), Nathan Burns (represented Great Britain at the 2009 Junior World Championships) and Danny Williams (also represented GB at the Junior Worlds) from the British Camp and Brent Iverson and Emily Bensted from the Australian National Squad.

Tickets are £70 per person or £600 for a table of 10 with all proceeds going to the ‘Going for Gold Charity’ which was formed in 2008 to help develop the Judo Club and other sports clubs in the county. (Camberley Judo Club – Registered Charity Number: 1130119).

Camberley Judo Club which has been active for over 20 years, has had a long and positive association with the Australians with the National Team as well as individual athletes preparing for major events with members at the Camberley Club over many years. Run on a totally voluntary basis the Club has produced numerous European and Great Britain Champions as well as many Olympians with one of their biggest triumphs being Karina Byant who will also be attending the Gala Dinner. Karina competed at the Sydney, Athens, and Beijing Olympics and has achieved the heady heights of Junior World Champion on two occasions.
