Juniors get Camberley Judo Club off to a flying start in 2011!

Junior members of Camberley Judo Club set the trend for a successful 2011 with the first competition of the year at the Bristol Mini Mon event.

Luke Smith, Oliver Baldwin and Ben Baxter put in gutsy performances in their categories to all narrowly miss out on a bronze medal. Baxter who had 20 children in his weight category started off on a roll winning three fights by Ippon, maximum points in a Judo Contest.

Unfortunately he then lost in the Semi Final by a hold down and then lost the bronze medal fight on a small score which meant he ended up with a well deserved 5th place in a largely attended weight category.

Toby Roberts was keen to get the Camberley Juniors on to a medal roll and didn’t let the team down by winning the gold medal in the u38kg Category.

Toby won 3 fights by Ippon to then reach the final, where his quickest fight only lasted an impressive 5 seconds.

In the final Roberts met a previous nemesis who he had come up against in two previous finals and both times ended up with the Silver, a result not to be repeated at this tournament.  A fantastic performance by Roberts in the final saw him walk away with the Gold medal where he beat his opponent by a Yuko score.

Next up to the mat was Oliver Bergqvist in the under 42kg category. Bergqvist finished off 2010 with a gold medal at his first international tournament and was determined to come away with the same medal at this competition. Bergqvist ended up with maximum points in all three of his contests and was on the mat for a total of 40 seconds out of a possible 9 minutes!

Bergqvist who is currently only a yellow belt was then allowed by the competition organisers to compete in the same weight category but against children who were orange belts to give him a bit more of a challenge. Again Bergqvist won all his fights by Ippon, one lasting for only 4 seconds beating Toby Roberts 5 second Ippon record. A second Gold for Bergqvist completed the day.

The gauntlet has been set for the senior elite team who are competing in the British Trials this coming weekend and will hopefully also come home with an impressive medal haul.
