Success for Camberley Judo Club in Belfast

Fresh from success two weeks ago in the British Open Camberley Judo Club members were on great form again at the Northern Ireland Open. Gareth Fairclough claimed his first gold in a senior ranking event winning his three contests in the under 60kg division by the maximum score. Danny Williams’ good form continued with five straight wins to take the gold medal in the under73kg division. Danny’s final went to judge’s decision and saw him get the nod from all three officials. Harry Fenner also competing in the under 73 kg class claimed the bronze medal with four solid wins after an early loss. Josh Butler at only 17 won medals in both the senior and junior (under 20) categories. Josh, who competes at under 90kg, won three fights by maximum score to reach the final in the junior age group. He was beaten in the final by current junior world medalist Luke Taylor. Josh then fought again in the senior age group. He stormed to a bronze medal shocking his much older and experienced opponents with all of his wins coming from maximum points. He narrowly lost one contest on a contentious decision. Danny Finney and Robyn Irwin both won bronze medals in the junior age group. Finney lost his semi-final in the under 73 kg class but recovered well to take the bronze medal in under a minute. Robyn competing at under 63kg battled hard all day against much older opponents and deserved her third place finish.
