Johnstone at 52kg won all her fights through the knockouts to reach the final. In the Final she competed against a top Croatian. Johnstone had been on top form all day beating a highly ranked Russian in the semis and devastating the croation by two waza ari scores to take the gold medal.
In the same tournament Camberley’s Daniel Williams also walked away with the Gold in the men’s under 73kg category. Williams, who battled through five fights to reach the final, met Bosnian favourite Mitar Mrdic. With home support the Bosnian put up a strong fight against the British Number one, however Williams emerged the winner and Bosnian Open champion winning by a yuko score.
On home soil earlier in the month Camberley Judo club were competing at various competitions throughout the UK.
Medal success was had at the English Senior Open in Sheffield. The event which sees the best of British Judo saw Camberley Walk away with five medals. Matthew Clempner took the gold in the men’s over 100kg category. In a close fought match against his rival Christopher Sherrington, Clempner battled through to emerge the winner of the tournament and a well deserved Gold.
Bronze medals went to Nathon Burns in the men’s under 66kg and Ian Byrne in the men’s under 60kg.
Rebecca Dunning and Sophie Johnstone both competed against each other in the women’s under 57kg category to finish the day off with a Silver medal to Dunning and Bronze to Johnstone who was fighting up a weight category.
At the Southern area Open Championships Camberley again walked away with some impressive medals. Golds going to Jess Black in the under 63kg category and Gary Howe in the men’s Kyu grade section. A silver was won by Scott Dunbar and Bronze went to Frazer Chamberlain.
On the junior side, the Camberley Kids took part in the Falcon Judo Club mini mon event for children who are yellow belt and under.
8 players took part in the event and 6 of them walked away with medals. Gold’s going to Oliver Bergqvist, Toby Roberts and Tom Kirk. A silver medal was won by the only Camberley Girl at the event Phoenix Govey Gray and bronze medals went to Ross Edgar and Cameron Edgar.
